"Asleep"

I think the song "Asleep" by the Smiths has a relevance in Charlie's life because the song suggets  the ideas of resignation but a small amount of hope at the same time. As brought up in class, I think Charlie is devoid of emotion in a way. We can see this through the first few letters he writes because his descriptions of his family members and certain events are simple and almost have an objective feel. I think that Charlie has resigned himself to the life he currently lives. He feels that at this moment this is his life, and this is who he is as a person. Charlie is unhappy with his life, but he is at peace with the fact that he is unhappy. "Don't feel bad for me, I want you to know" reflects how Charlie is not necessarily complaining or looking for sympathy, but merely states the facts of his humdrum life.
I do think that there remains hope in Charlie's mind of a happier place- "There is another world, there is a better world"- yet Charlie does not know how to get there. This is why he chooses to write letters. Charlie just wants to sort things out, so he may have a chance of being happier in the future.
